Help! How do I make an Icon?

Making your own icon has never been easier! Using our free online Icon Maker, you can create your own icon in 4 easy steps. All you need is a picture to use as your icon. Follow these 4 steps:

First, select your favorite picture by clicking the Browse button to find a picture in your computer.
Now you must decide what type of icon to make. This is easy, choose from Avatars or Emoticons. You can change your icon type later.
In section 2 you can see your picture with a selection tool on top of it. What you see in the square is what will be shown in your icon, areas outside the square will not be in your icon.
You can move the square by dragging it or change the size by pulling on the corners.
Finally, check what your icon will look like in the Preview box and click "Make Icon" to create and save it!

After your icon has been created, you can save it to your computer and use it anywhere you like. If you are not happy with the icon that was made, you can click Close and go back and make any changes you want. You may also load a different picture and make yourself another icon!

Where can I use the Icons I make?

That depends on the icon type you choose, but here are some general guidelines:

Display Pictures or Avatars

If you chose to make a Display Picture or Avatar, then it can be used almost anywhere. They can be used in MSN Messenger, Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Skype, Google Talk and ICQ. The only IM client that can't use these is AIM.

You can use them for social networking and profiles (MySpace, Facebook, Bebo, etc). It's never been easier to create your own MySpace Icons! They also work great in forums and boards as your avatar.

Animated Emoticon (big)

Animated Emoticons are the biggest emoticons available, they are mainly used in MSN and Windows Live Messenger. Once you've made an icon, just add it to Messenger with the rest of your Emoticons and Smileys. They will work with MSN Messenger 7.0 or newer. After you make your own ones, check our free animated emoticons.

Buddy Icons

AIM icons are meant to be used as Buddy Icons in AOL Instant Messenger, but can also be used anywhere else. Note that if you make a non-animated Buddy Icon, it will not work as an emoticon in MSN/Live Messenger.

Static Emoticon (small)

This is the smallest size of icon available in the online icon maker. Generally too small to display anything clearly, but good for text and smileys. Small emoticons are 19x19 pixels and are used mostly in MSN or Live Messenger, though they can be used anywhere else (they work well as forum emoticons). This type of emoticon was originally introduced in MSN Messenger 6, and is still in use today.
